Balancelogic - Digital Transformation - Fractional CIO Leadership

Updated October 2026

A fractional CIO gives a small or mid-sized business senior technology leadership for part of the week, without adding a full-time executive to the payroll. Our standard Fractional CIO engagement costs about two-thirds less than a full-time CIO’s base salary, before benefits, bonus or recruiting costs.*

The salary gap is the easy part to measure. The bigger savings usually come from the decisions that leader makes: what to buy, what to stop paying for, and which projects to start in what order.

What does a fractional CIO cost compared with a full-time hire?

The salary comparison above is only the starting point. A full-time hire also brings benefits, bonus and recruiting costs, plus the time it takes to find the right person.

The exact cost of a fractional engagement depends on the hours and scope you need. We set that together after a first conversation, based on the leadership your business needs today.

Where do the bigger savings come from?

Most of the value shows up in the technology budget you already spend:

  • Purchases that match a plan. A roadmap tied to business goals means fewer tools bought in a hurry and later abandoned.
  • Vendor and contract decisions. Someone reviews renewals, spots overlapping subscriptions, and makes sure each provider knows what it’s accountable for.
  • Projects scoped before they start. Cloud moves, software builds and AI pilots get a clear outcome, owner and budget up front, which cuts down on restarts.
  • Risk you don’t pay for later. Business continuity planning and clear security priorities reduce the chance of an outage or incident turning into a crisis.

What won’t a fractional CIO replace?

A fractional CIO is a leadership role, not a support desk. Your day-to-day IT still needs the right provider, whether that’s internal staff or a managed service provider.

A good MSP manages and protects your technology. A Managed Technology Provider (MTP) like Balancelogic makes sure it’s planned, coordinated and aligned with the business. The two roles work together.

It also isn’t a way to avoid investment. Sometimes the plan says to spend more in one area, such as backups or security, so you can spend less on firefighting elsewhere.

When is a fractional CIO the right fit?

It tends to fit small and mid-sized businesses that:

  • Have no one in-house who owns technology decisions
  • Work with several providers, with no single point of accountability
  • Are planning growth, a new office, a cloud move or a compliance push
  • See technology spending rise without a clear plan behind it

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fractional CIO cost?

It depends on the hours and scope you need, which we agree on together after a first conversation about your business and goals. The comparison with a full-time CIO’s salary at the top of this post shows the typical difference.

Is a fractional CIO the same as a fractional CTO?

They overlap. A CTO usually focuses on building product technology, which matters most in software companies. A CIO focuses on how technology runs the business: strategy, systems, vendors and continuity. Most small and mid-sized businesses that don’t sell software need the CIO view.

Will a fractional CIO replace our IT provider?

No. Your IT team or managed service provider keeps handling day-to-day support. The fractional CIO owns the plan and coordinates the providers involved. Owning the technology function and managing technology are complementary roles.

How soon will we see results?

Typically, the first 90 days produce an assessment and a prioritized roadmap, often with a few early improvements along the way. Our post on the first 90 days with a fractional CIO walks through each stage.
